thursday 20th february 6:30pm // £5

We're very excited to announce that Gillian Darley, author of one of our bestselling books, 'Excellent Essex,' will be joining us for another evening discussion on her much loved biography of our county.

Misunderstood and often overlooked, there are many hidden secrets of Essex that not many know. Alongside Essex Man and TOWIE, there's the Essex that nurtured the first Puritan settlers in America, welcomed refugees from Europe, fugitives from the underworld and bombed-out East Enders. Where dreamers and makers, punk poets, anarchist sects and inventors all found inspiration.

A Colchester nurseryman was the first to trade with a secretive Eastern Kingdom.

Braintree's only earthquake inspired an innovative building system.

In Epping, a spat over firewood led to an historic victory for the common people.

In Essex, the clash between city and countryside, capital and province, created a shower of sparks that ultimately set the world on fire.

Drawing on everything from ancient maps to reality TV, Gillian's book is a wonderfully insightful look at our county, and an entertaining, thought-provoking read all round. Gillian will be discussing her book, answering questions and signing copies afterwards. We'll also be serving prosecco and refreshments. Tickets are £5 and can be booked in store or reserved over the phone (01621 854968) Please note that we are limited to 30 seats, so do get in touch as soon as possible before tickets sell out.

We hope to see you there!
